Natividad Recertification of Fisher-Divers 2010

The Fishing Cooperative of Isla Natividad in colaboration with Comunidad y Biodiversidad (cobi.org.mx), in the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, set up two no-take marine areas in 2006 to evaluate the effects these may have on improving their fisheries yields.

Every year RC staff travels to the the island to recertify fisher-divers who will then proceed to collect data from inside the two reserves and from four control sites where fishing does take place. These divers generally conduct their work on hookah, but for the monitoring they use SCUBA.

Colleen Wisniewski, RCCA's Southern California Regional Manager, and Mary Luna RC's Program Manager for Mexico & Outreach, traveled to Natividad in July 2010 to conduct the recertification of the divers. We thank Comunidad y Biodiversidad and the Natividad Cooperative for all their support.
